Annisul Huq - A dreamer on a mission

Charming presenter, entrepreneur and the dynamic mayor of DCC, it seemed Annisul Huq had the Midas touch. His winning personality and can-do, must-do approach to life will be missed by all who knew him and by all those who have never met him. His tireless work on improving the city we live in and the cultural world we love touched more people than he probably imagined. Every time I pass by the mural of Kazi Nazrul Islam beside the Saarc Fountain at Nazrul Islam Avenue, I will remember him. The mural had fallen into a state of ruin through years of neglect. Getting no response from the authorities for a long time, I finally texted our family friend Mayor Annisul Huq. He replied almost instantaneously to my idea of an artiste's protest in front of the mural. He agreed to attend in person and accept our demands. On May 24, 2016, true to his word he arrived punctually just as Nazrul artistes assembled at the venue to sing inspirational songs beside the mural. As the TV cameras began to roll, cameras flashed---and to the delight of everyone Annis bhai joined us in singing "Durgomo Giri", an anthem by the Poet. He loved to sing as much as he loved to be in the company of artistes. Annis bhai patiently listened to our concerns, somewhat baffled that the image of our National Poet was in such a state and that no remedial work had been undertaken. Within a week, he called me to say the mural had been repainted and repaired. Was there anything else he could help artistes with? He asked. The very last time I came across him was at the Westin Dhaka, lending his weight to a campaign to raise money for terminally ill artistes. Thus in November 2016 was born the "Shilpi'r Pashey Foundation", very much an Annisul Huq initiative. Eminent musical personalities Alauddin Ali, Lucky Akhand and singer Shammi Akher who were undergoing medical treatment received Taka 40 lacs, 20 lacs and 10 lacs respectively from the foundation. That was also the last time a frail Lucky Akhand came up on stage in a wheelchair with his band Happy Touch, and sang his hit number "Agey Jodi Jantam". All present at the event stood by him singing the song in chorus, in an emotional, symbolic picture of support for the artiste. Only a few months back I sent him a link to BTV's programme Jalsa--meticulously conceived by him in 1995. I remembered how Annis bhai and his elegant wife Rubana had invited us over to their apartment to give us an idea on the rather novel programme. It was an achievement to get so many veteran artistes under one roof from Kalim Sharafi, Nilufer Yasmin, Subir Nandi, Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya, Shakila Zafar. It was more remarkable to get the veterans to agree to sing not their popular songs but the songs of rock bands. He readily agreed to throw me in with Miles, while others mixed and matched with Feedback, Renaissance and Souls. The production took two months to be completed. Brilliantly produced by Nawazish Ali Khan with limited resources at BTV in the year 1995, the programme was a grand success. Annis bhai had managed the time despite running what was to become one of the largest textile companies in Bangladesh. After seeing the programme on Youtube (3 million views and counting), he sent me a text message with the words, "Thank you so so much for Jalsha… I can't recognize myself". Behind all his smiles, something dangerous caught him unawares, an illness that was draining him. There was a shocked lull in the media, as it kept on broadcasting news that Mayor Annisul Huq was not keeping well and had been diagnosed with cerebral vasculitis. All the prayers and well wishes that must have travelled from people's hearts to his must surely have eased his suffering, we hope. After battling for three months he finally said goodbye to us all last week. As the sea of people assembled at the army stadium from all walks of life it was difficult to keep one's emotions at bay. Not a dry eye in the crowd, not one without a heavy heart. His love of life and his ever present smile were truly infectious. If I could text him, I would say- - "Thank you so so much Annis bhai for always being there beside us, for showing us that doing big things start with dreaming big." I am sure he will light up the stars in the theatre that he will call his own.

Annisul Huq: A man of many talents

Known mainly as a successful businessman and a popular TV show host, Annisul Huq surprised many with his remarkable rise to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor's office two and a half years ago. Even before he became the mayor, he was well known at home and abroad as a leading ready-made garment exporter. People also knew him from his days as regular TV show host on Bangladesh Television in the early 1980s. Apart from holding tête-à-têtes with many politically significant personalities, he had interviewed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chief Khaleda Zia before the 1991 election. Annisul had been a full-time businessman for decades. After his stint in the electronic media, he had established Mohammadi Group in 1986 and had been its chairman since. After that, he went on to head top business organizations like Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the apex trade body of South Asia. He also led the country's top garment exporters' association, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and apex trade body FBCCI. Annisul also served as the president of Independent Power Producers Association – an organization of companies that own power plants in the country and supply to the national grid. His initiatives touched many lives and helped shape many of the government's policies. Also Read- Dhaka North Mayor Annisul Huq no more Annisul, with no apparent political ties, was a surprise pick for the ruling Awami League for the April 2015 polls for DNCC mayor. He won the April 2015 election handily to emerge as the first mayor of DNCC. In the affidavits he submitted to the Election Commission before the polls, he had mentioned having a net worth of $3.25 million, roughly equivalent to Tk30 crore. Annisul was born on October 27, 1952, in Noakhali's Kabirhat area to Md Shariful Huq, a government employee, and Rakeya Lutful Huq, a housewife. He studied economics at Chittagong University, the university's Proctor Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury said. Annisul and his wife Rubana Huq, who is the current Managing Director of Mohammadi Group, have three children – Navidul Huq, Wamiq Umaira and Tanisha Huq. Heavily involved in the literary circle in Bangladesh, Rubana also contributes to US-based international daily Wall Street Journal. She is also the general secretary of the Saarc Literary Foundation's Bangladesh chapter. The couple's eldest and only son Navidul is also a director in Mohammadi Group and the managing director of Desh Energy Ltd. One of their daughters, Wamiq, now works at the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland after completing her studies at New York University and Princeton University. Their other daughter Tanisha recently completed her bachelor's in political science and economics form Simmons College in Boston. Annisul's youngest brother, Gen Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq, is the current chief of the Bangladesh Army.

আনিসুল হক: স্বপ্ন ও সাহসের আরেকজনকে আর পাবো?

বছর দুয়েক আগের কথা। বাসার পাশে সিটি কর্পোরেশন কর্মীরা রাস্তায় কোন একটা কাজ করছেন। এরকম কাজে মাঝেমধ্যেই কর্মীদের অলসতা পেয়ে বসে। তাদের কেউ বিড়ি-সিগারেট খান, কেউ গল্প-গুজবে মশগুল হয়ে পড়েন। পাশ দিয়ে যাওয়ার সময় শুনলাম, সর্দার গোছের একজন বলছেন: ঠিকঠাক কাজ কর। নাইলে মেয়র নিজেই কিন্তু আইয়া পড়ব। তার কিছুদিন আগে ঢাকা উত্তরের মেয়র হয়েছেন আনিসুল হক। আমি যেখানে থাকি সে এলাকাটা উত্তরে পড়েছে। মেয়র নিজেই কাজ দেখতে চলে আসতে পারেন বলে ওই সর্দার কর্মীদেরকে যার ভয় দেখাচ্ছেন তিনি আনিসুল হক। তাদের ভয় থেকে এটা স্পষ্ট যে নতুন মেয়র তাদের সরাসরি বা পরোক্ষভাবে এমন বার্তা দিয়ে রেখেছেন যেখানে কাজে ফাঁকি দেওয়ার সুযোগ নেই। হোক কিছুটা বিতর্কিত নির্বাচন এবং তার প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বি প্রধান প্রার্থীর পরিবারের সঙ্গেই আমার ব্যক্তিগত ঘনিষ্ঠতা বেশি, কিন্তু নির্বাচনের আগে থেকেই আমরা নিশ্চিত ছিলাম যে আনিসুল হক নির্বাচিত হওয়া মানে ঢাকা মহানগরী তার ইতিহাসে সেরা মেয়র পাবে। তিনি নির্বাচিত হওয়ার অল্পদিনের মধ্যেই আমরা সেটা টের পেয়েছি। সাত রাস্তার অবৈধ ট্রাক স্ট্যান্ড উচ্ছেদ করে রানওয়ের মতো রাস্তা করে দেওয়া কিংবা গাবতলী বাস স্ট্যান্ড বেদখল থেকে মুক্ত করা কিংবা বিলবোর্ড অপসারণের মতো তার বড় বড় সাহসের বিষয় আমরা সবাই জানি। আমি অবশ্য নিজের এলাকা দিয়ে তাকে অন্যভাবেও চিনেছি যেখানে উন্নয়নের সঙ্গে মিশে ছিল সৌন্দর্য, শিল্প এবং নাগরিকবোধ। তিনি মেয়র নির্বাচিত হওয়ার পর শুধু বাসার চারপাশের রাস্তাগুলোই ঠিক হয়ে গেলো এমন না। রাস্তার দু'পাশে ফুলের সমারোহও বসলো। কর্পোরেশন নিজে কিছু টব বসিয়ে দিলো, নগরবাসীকেও উৎসাহ দিলো যেন বাড়ির সামনেটা সবাই সুন্দর রাখে। পথে যেন ময়লা পড়ে না থাকে সেজন্যও কিছু দূরে দূরে বিন বক্স বসানো হলো। এর সবই যে সফল হয়েছে এমন না, বিশেষ করে যেখানে নগরবাসীর নিজেদের অংশগ্রহণের বিষয় ছিল সে জায়গাটায় পুরোপুরি সাফল্য আসেনি। এটা আনিসুল হকের ব্যর্থতা নয়, এটা আমাদের ব্যর্থতা; নাগরিক হিসেবে আমাদের দায়িত্বহীনতা। তবে, পরিচ্ছন্নতার জায়গায় কর্পোরেশন তার কাজ ঠিকই করে গেছে। আবারও বাসার পাশের একটি উদাহরণ দেই। আমি যেখানে থাকি তার কাছাকাছি একটা সরকারি হাসপাতাল আছে যেখান থেকে মূলত: মায়েদের স্বাস্থ্যসেবা দেওয়া হয়। কয়েক বছর আগে এক আত্মীয়র বাচ্চা হওয়ার সময় আমরা সেখানে যাবো কিনা ভাবছিলাম। যাওয়া হয়নি তার কারণ ওই হাসপাতালটির সামনে এক বিশাল ভাগাড়। এলাকার সব গৃহস্থালি ময়লা-আবর্জনা সংগ্রহ করে সেখানে রাখা হয়। সেখান থেকে কর্পোরেশনের গাড়ি আবর্জনা নিয়ে যায়। অবস্থা এমন ছিল যে গন্ধের জন্য ওই এলাকা দিয়ে যাওয়াই সমস্যা। অবস্থা এমন হওয়ার কারণে তখন ওই হাসপাতালে যাওয়ার কথা কল্পনাও করতে পারিনি। কিন্তু, এখন পরিস্থিতি ভিন্ন। আনিসুল হক মেয়র হওয়ার পর বছর দুয়েক আগে প্রথমে ওই ভাগাড়টি ঢেকে ফেলা হয়, পরে সেখানে গড়ে তোলা হয় একটি বাগান। এখন চাইলে ওই বাগানে গেলে আপনি না জানলে বুঝতেও পারবেন না যে এর ভেতরে একটি ভাগাড় আছে। এসব কাজ যে মেয়র আনিসুল হক নিজ হাতে করে দিয়েছেন এমন না। কিন্তু, পরিবর্তনটা হয়েছে। সেটা কীভাবে সম্ভব হলো? সম্ভব হলো এক. তার 'গ্রিন ঢাকা, ক্লিন ঢাকা'র স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়নের রূপরেখা এবং দুই. তার সম্পর্কে এমন ধারণা যে এখন আর পরিকল্পনা বাস্তবায়ন না করে বসে থাকা কিংবা টাকা গায়েব করে দেওয়া সম্ভব না। মেয়র আনিসুল হক সেই কর্মউদ্যোগী কর্মীমানুষ ছিলেন যিনি শুধু মুখে স্বপ্নের কথা বলেননি, স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়নে শুধু কাগজে-কলমে পরিকল্পনা করে বসে থাকেননি। তিনি নিজে উদ্যোগী হয়েছেন, অন্যদেরও উদ্যোগী করেছেন। এ কারণে তিনি নিজের ব্যবসায় যেমন সফল, তেমনি মেয়র হয়ে সিটি কর্পোরেশনের কাজেও সেই সাফল্যের পথে হাঁটছিলেন। আমাদের দুর্ভাগ্য মেয়র হিসেবে কাজের সিকিভাগ করার আগেই তিনি আমাদের ছেড়ে চলে গেছেন। তার মতো সফল মানুষ আরেকজন পাওয়া খুব কঠিন। উদ্যোক্তা হিসেবে আমাদের চারপাশে অনেক সফল মানুষ আছেন। রাজনীতি করেন এবং মেয়র হতে চান এরকম মানুষের সংখ্যাও অনেক। সংস্কৃতির যে অঙ্গনে আনিসুল হকের বিচরণ ছিল সেখানেও অনেক সফল মানুষ আছেন। কিন্তু, সবগুলো গুণ একসঙ্গে হবে এরকম দ্বিতীয় আরেকজন আনিসুল হক কোথায়? সব দল, সব মত, সব পথের মানুষের কাছে গ্রহণযোগ্য হবেন এরকম আরেকজন আনিসুল হককে আমরা কোথায় পাবো? আমরা সবাই জানি, আনিসুল হক একজন স্বপ্নবান মানুষ ছিলেন। এ দেশে তিনি একাই কি স্বপ্নবান? না, এরকম আরো অনেকে আছেন। কিন্তু, ক'জন তার মতো সাহসী? ক'জন চ্যালেঞ্জ নিতে জানেন? ক'জন উদ্যোগী হন? ক'জনকে দেশের সর্বোচ্চ ক্ষমতাধর মানুষটি বিশ্বাস করে দায়িত্ব তুলে দিতে পারেন? আনিসুল হক আসলে একজনই ছিলেন। তাকে চিনতে পেরেছিলেন বলেই তাকে মেয়র করেছিলেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা। আর প্রধানমন্ত্রীর দেওয়া দায়িত্বের প্রতি সম্মান রেখেই বিদায় নিয়েছেন আনিসুল হক। আমরা আর কখনোই হয়তো আরেকজন আনিসুল হককে পাবো না। তবে, তিনি যদি মেয়র না হতেন তাহলেও এদেশ তাকে মনে রাখতো। টেলিভিশনের পর্দায় অনুষ্ঠান করে তিনি ছিলেন একজন নায়ক, সফল উদ্যোক্তা হিসেবে তরুণদের কাছে তিনি ছিলেন অনুকরণীয়, বেসরকারি খাতের বিকাশে ব্যবসায়ীদের নেতা হিসেবে তিনি ছিলেন এক আদর্শ। আনিসুল হক টিভির পর্দায় আমাদের আনন্দ দিয়েছেন, ব্যবসায়ী হিসেবে তরুণদের পথ দেখিয়েছেন, মেয়র হিসেবে পরিবর্তনে সাহস যুগিয়েছেন। এ সব কিছুই তিনি পেরেছেন কারণ স্বপ্নবান আনিসুল হক শুধু মননশীলই ছিলেন না, তিনি সৃজনশীলও ছিলেন; স্বপ্নবান আনিসুল হক শুধু স্বপ্ন দেখাননি, স্বপ্নের পথে হাঁটার পথটাও দেখিয়েছেন। তিনি শুধু উন্নয়নই দেখেননি, সেখানে সৌন্দর্যটাও দেখেছেন, সবকিছু সুন্দর করে গড়ে তুলতে চেয়েছেন। তার নাগরিক চিন্তাবোধের সঙ্গে সবসময়ই মিশে ছিল সৌন্দর্য। তিনি আসলে এক শিল্পী ছিলেন যে শিল্পী আমাদের নাগরিক করে সুন্দর হিসেবে গড়ে তুলতে চেয়েছিলেন। তিনি ছিলেন স্বপ্ন, উদ্যোগ এবং উন্নয়নের এক কবি। তার মেধা, যোগ্যতা, উদ্যোগ, সৃজনশীলতা, সৌন্দর্যবোধ, শিল্পীমন ও সাহসের কারণে আনিসুল হককে মনে রাখবে বাংলাদেশ।

মৃত্যু অমোঘ, অনিবার্য। 'আকাশের লক্ষ তারা' জীবনকে প্রতিনিয়ত ডাকছে। এই ডাক অগ্রাহ্য করার ক্ষমতা কারও নেই। এই নিষ্ঠুর বাস্তবতার মধ্যেই সুখ-দুঃখের ভেলায় জীবননৌকা কখনও শান্ত, কখনও বা ঊর্মিমুখর সাগরে এগিয়ে চলে। নৌকাটি কখন হঠাৎ থেমে যাবে, তা শুধু একজনই জানেন- যিনি অলক্ষ্যে বসে বিশ্বব্রহ্মাণ্ডের সবকিছু নিয়ন্ত্রণ করছেন। এই নিষ্ঠুর বিধাতা বেশ কয়েক মাস আমাদের আশা-নিরাশার দোলাচলে দুলিয়ে প্রিয় আনিসুল হককে কেড়ে নিলেন। ঢাকা উত্তর সিটি করপোরেশনের সদা হাস্যমুখ মেয়র আনিসুল হক। 'ডিএনসিসির মেয়র', এ পরিচয় মোটেই মুখ্য নয়- তার বড় পরিচয় তিনি আমাদের লোক। আমাদের অতি প্রিয়জন। বৃহস্পতিবার মধ্যরাতে ভয়ঙ্কর দুঃসংবাদটি সমকালের নির্বাহী সম্পাদক মুস্তাফিজ শফি যখন জানাল, তখন আমি সস্ত্রীক রায়েরবাজারে আমার ঘনিষ্ঠ আত্মীয় সদ্যপ্রয়াত সাংবাদিক-লেখক মাসুদুল হকের পরিবারকে সান্ত্বনা জানিয়ে বাড়ি ফিরছিলাম। মেয়র আনিসুল হককে যে আমরা বেশি দিন মায়ার বাঁধনে আর বেঁধে রাখতে পারব না, তা তার চিকিৎসকরা আমাদের জানিয়ে দিলেও 'হোপ অ্যাগেইনস্ট হোপ'- বাক্যটির ওপর ঈষৎ ভরসা করতে চাচ্ছিলাম আমরা। নিয়তি আমাদের প্রত্যাশা পূরণ করল না। 'স্বপ্ন সারথি' এ শব্দ দুটির প্রতি আমার সবিশেষ দুর্বলতা রয়েছে। গতকাল সহযোগী একটি পত্রিকা প্রথম পাতার শিরোনামে আনিসুল হককে 'স্বপ্ন সারথি' বলেছে। আসলেই আনিসুল হকের দু'চোখ ভরা ছিল স্বপ্ন। শত প্রতিকূলতা লঙ্ঘন করে স্বপ্নপূরণে আপন মেধা ও সাহসের সদ্ব্যবহার করতেন। যারা কাছ থেকে আনিসুল হকের দুটো চোখের দিকে একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়েছেন, তারা সম্ভবত লক্ষ্য করেছেন, তার চোখ দুটিতে আলোর রেখা। সে রেখা ঈষৎ, কিন্তু দ্যুতিময়। সে আলো তার স্বপ্নের কণিকা। চমৎকার করে কথা বলতেন আনিসুল হক। একদা টিভির লাখো দর্শক-শ্রোতার প্রিয় উপস্থাপক ছিলেন। রমণীর হৃদয় হরণ করার মতো তার চমৎকার বাক্যবিলাস আলোর মতো ছড়িয়ে পড়ত টেলিভিশনের পর্দায়। আমরা মুগ্ধ হতাম। অনেকেরই শঙ্কা ছিল, রূপালি পর্দায় জনপ্রিয় তারকা সমস্যাসংকুল রাজধানীর মেয়র হিসেবে সফল নাও হতে পারেন। একটি সাধারণ ধারণা ছিল, আনিসুল হকের স্বপ্নের ভুবন আর বাস্তবতার মধ্যে ব্যবধান যোজন। মাত্র কয়েক মাসের মধ্যে সেই শঙ্কাকে অসার প্রতিপন্ন করার উদ্যোগ নিলেন তিনি। মেয়র অফিসের সবকিছু বদলে গেল। কাজ, কাজ আর কাজ। আমি নিজেই দেখেছি, রাত ২টায় গুলশানে নগর সংস্কারের কাজ মেয়র স্বয়ং তদারক করছেন। এই এক অবিশ্বাস্য দৃশ্যপট। এ ব্যাপারে একাধিকবার তার সঙ্গে আমার কথা হয়েছিল। উত্তরার প্রতি বিশেষ মনোযোগী হওয়ার অনুরোধ জানালে তিনি কৌতুকভরে বলেছিলেন, এ কিন্তু স্বজনপ্রীতি হয়ে গেল সারওয়ার ভাই। তারপর বললেন, উত্তরার প্রতি আমার কিঞ্চিৎ পক্ষপাতিত্ব থাকবে। একদিন উত্তরার উন্নয়ন সকলের নজর কাড়বে। বঙ্গবন্ধুর আদর্শ ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনায় বিশ্বাসী আনিসুল হক কোনো রাজনৈতিক চাপের কাছে মাথানত করেননি। এ ব্যাপারে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সবুজসংকেত পেয়েছিলেন তিনি। নিজে শতভাগ সৎ থাকার কারণে অসৎদের বিরুদ্ধে পদক্ষেপ নিতে তার কোনো দ্বিধা-সংশয় ছিল না। মেয়রের দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার পরপরই তিনি রাজধানীকে যানজটমুক্ত করার জন্য বেশ কিছু সাহসী পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছিলেন। তেজগাঁও ট্রাকস্ট্যান্ড উচ্ছেদের জন্য মেয়রের নেতৃত্বে অভিযানকালে ট্রাকচালক-শ্রমিকদের মুহুর্মুহু ইটপাটকেল বর্ষণে আনিসুল হকের জীবন বিপন্ন হয়েছিল। যথাসময়ে পুলিশ না এলে একটি মর্মান্তিক দুর্ঘটনা ঘটে যেতে পারত। আনিসুল হকের এ উদ্যোগ শেষ পর্যন্ত অর্থহীন হয়ে পড়ে- রাজপথ আবার ট্রাক ড্রাইভার-শ্রমিকদের দখলে চলে যায়। এ প্রসঙ্গে একটি দাবি আমি তুলতে চাই- সাতরাস্তা থেকে তেজগাঁও রেলগেট পর্যন্ত সড়কটির নাম 'আনিসুল হক সড়ক' করা হোক। আনিসুল হকের আরেক স্বপ্ন ছিল, রাজধানীর হারানো খালগুলো উদ্ধার। এ লক্ষ্যে সমকালের সুহৃদ সমাবেশের উদ্যোগে গত ১ এপ্রিল আয়োজিত নদী অলিম্পিয়াড অনুষ্ঠানের প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন আনিসুল হক। তিনি আবেগঘন কণ্ঠে বলেছিলেন :সন্তানের কাছে মায়ের দুধ যেমন প্রয়োজনীয়, নদীর পানিও ভূমির জন্য তেমনই। একসময় বলা হতো নদীমাতৃক বাংলাদেশ। সেই নদী আজ হারিয়ে যাচ্ছে। ডিএনসিসি এলাকায় ২৬টি খাল থাকার কথা। বৃষ্টির পানি খাল দিয়েই নদীতে চলে যাওয়ার কথা ছিল। সেই খাল ও নদী হারিয়ে গেছে। এখন ডিএনসিসি এলাকার জলজট নিরসন করাই মেয়রের জন্য কঠিন চ্যালেঞ্জ হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। বৃষ্টির পানি এখন আর নদীতে যায় না। দখলদাররা নদী দখল ও ভরাট করেছে। আজ ঢাকা বিশ্বের দ্বিতীয় দূষিত শহরে পরিণত হয়েছে। দূষণের কারণে ২৫ শতাংশ শিশুর ফুসফুস নষ্ট হচ্ছে। আজ শিশুপুত্রের কবরে শেষ শয্যা আনিসুল হকের। একদা তার দেহ মাটিতে বিলীন হয়ে যাবে। তবে আমাদের স্মৃতি থেকে কখনও হারিয়ে যাবেন না আনিসুল হক।
